I like painting hands because they are very expressive, and I often find that the rough stage with the sharp tonal values has a very pleasing effect.

Elena: I have come back to painting in my middle years (that's if I make it to 90!) and have not had any formal fine art training. I am self taught and picked up soft pastels about 4 years ago. I fell in love and have been hungry to learn ever since. Portraits were followed by still life paintings and it was there that I really became captivated with the creative process. That was also the beginning of my love affair with old and unusual objects. Anything with a shiny surface or an unusual patina catches my eye. I love trawling antique and charity shops in the hope of unearthing an interesting item that captures my imagination – who used it and what for? Was it someone’s treasure? Will it make someone remember having something similar themselves? My style is realistic and I am working in Acrylics as well as pastels - two totally different mediums! I am starting to exhibit in local exhibitions and run my own annual show (very small at the moment). I am really keen to promote art in schools and would like to find the time to work with gifted and talented young artists.
