Still Life - Water Jug

I have begun searching the local antique shops for more shiny things to paint! I fell in love with this little silver plated hot water jug that would have graced the tea table of the 1906 lady of the house. It's pleasing in so many ways: its history, its design and its shininess!!

Unfortunately I hadn't learnt the art of not getting in the reflection and needed to faithfully reproduce what I had captured. The pink highlights on the neck of the jug were fantastic but would have been meaningless if I had tried to remove myself from the reflection. Not a painting a day as these take too long, but still a good discipline to paint every day.

Studio nearly finished and I can't wait.

  1. I love the reflection you put in your artwork. As I took a closer look at it, isn't that the reflection of you taking the picture? Is that also the studion you are in? :)

  3. Hi Paul,

Yep that's me!! It's the only bit I wish could have changed. A pitfall of working from a photo I guess - I do prefer the controlled element that painting from a photo gives. That's also the current 'studio' wich is really the end of my bedroom but we are building a room on the back of the house that will be a better working space for me. I am looking forward to it being completed!

  4. Thanks Christina - I did take some other photos with the reflection of me less obvious but then lost the blue of the evening light in the window!
